TAN (Tax deduction and Collection Account Number)

 

TAN is 10 digits alphanumeric number and it is used as an abbreviation for Tax Deduction and Collection Account number. Every Tax deductor should quote the TAN No. while making any payment of tax to the Central Government.

TAN No. is visible from your Form 26AS/Form 16/Form 16A.

TAN of the employer is not required in case of self-assessment and advance tax.

TAN card gets delivered within 7-15 business days. The decision however solely depends upon the Issuing Authority of government of India.

The TAN number has to be quoted in all the communications with tax department failing which may attract a penalty. The banks also don’t entertain TDS payments and TDS returns if the TAN number is not quoted.It is mandatory for all assessee’s to quote TAN who are required to deduct TDS on payments made.

Validity of TAN

Unless there are changes in the details submitted during the application for TAN registration, a TAN is issued with lifetime validity and doesn’t need to be renewed and the same have to be communicated to the Tax Department.
